Volvo Cars has officially commenced production of the highly anticipated 2025 Volvo EX90 electric SUV at its factory near Charleston, South Carolina. This milestone marks a significant expansion for the Ridgeville plant, which had previously been home to the Volvo S60 sedan. Let’s delve into the details.
A Technologically Advanced SUV
The EX90 represents Volvo’s commitment to cutting-edge technology. During the Q4 2023 earnings conference call, CEO Jim Rowan emphasized that the EX90 is the company’s most technically advanced car ever. To ensure its software was flawless, Volvo delayed production until it was confident that the vehicle’s performance and safety features met the highest standards.
Deliveries and Variants
The first customer deliveries of the EX90 are expected in North America and Europe during the second half of 2024. The SUV will be available in three variants:
- Single Motor (RWD): With 205 kW and 490 Nm of torque, this variant accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 8.4 seconds and boasts a top speed of 180 kph. Its 104 kWh (net) battery pack provides a WLTP range of approximately 580 km.
- Twin Motor (AWD): Packing 300 kW and 700 Nm of torque, this version accelerates to 100 kph in just 5.9 seconds. Its 111 kWh (net) battery allows for a range of up to 600 km.
- Twin Motor Performance (AWD): The quickest of the bunch, this variant reaches 100 kph in 4.9 seconds. Its 111 kWh (net) battery, shared with the Twin Motor variant, provides a range of around 590 km.
Production Capacity and Investments
Volvo’s US plant in South Carolina has an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles. The company has made substantial investments in recent years, expanding the factory and upgrading the body shop and paint shop. Additionally, the Ridgeville facility now houses a battery pack production line.
Global Reach
While production primarily takes place in South Carolina, Volvo also plans to manufacture the EX90 in China. Chinese deliveries are scheduled to begin in November 2024. The EX90’s prices start at $76,695 in the US and €83,700 in Germany.
